Mangroves at Pantai Pasar Lamo, Pesisir Selatan: Connecting Coastal Conservation with Science

Coastal protection does not always require concrete structures or hard engineering. At suitable locations, nature-based approaches such as mangrove rehabilitation can become an important part of protecting ecosystems while improving coastal resilience.

Coastal protection does not always require concrete structures or hard engineering. At suitable locations, nature-based approaches such as mangrove rehabilitation can become an important part of protecting ecosystems while improving coastal resilience.

The Pesisir Selatan Regency Government reported on 10 September 2026 that mangrove planting activities had been carried out at Pantai Pasar Lamo, Salido Village, IV Jurai District.

The local government expressed the hope that the programme would help reduce coastal abrasion, maintain environmental balance, and provide longer-term benefits for coastal communities.

How can CORZ contribute?

Mangrove-based coastal protection can be strengthened by first understanding how the shoreline has changed over the longer term.

Historical satellite imagery can be used to compare shoreline positions from year to year and identify sections that have consistently experienced erosion, remained relatively stable, or undergone accretion.

CORZ Indonesia can integrate this information with analyses of waves, currents, tides, and sediment transport. Together, these approaches can help explain why one part of a coast retreats while another remains stable.

Where mangrove rehabilitation has already been implemented, subsequent monitoring can examine both vegetation development and shoreline response. At a more advanced stage, conditions before and after rehabilitation can be compared to help evaluate how effective the nature-based intervention has been.

Mangroves should not be regarded as a universal solution for every type of coastal erosion. High-energy coastlines or areas with particular geomorphological characteristics may require further analysis and, in some cases, a combination of nature-based and engineered approaches.

For this reason, CORZ Indonesia promotes site-specific coastal protection based on observations, satellite data, numerical modelling, and appropriate nature-based solutions to provide a stronger foundation for coastal planning.
